ICANN published its Registration Data Policy on 21 February 2024. The announcement described requirements covering the collection, transfer, publication, and retention of domain registration data. It set a transition period beginning in August 2024, followed by the policy taking effect on 21 August 2025. Read the original announcement.
This retrospective looks at what that 2024 announcement meant for buyers comparing private domain registration. It helps explain why a provider’s signup form and the public lookup result can tell different parts of the story.
Compare the whole registration process
An offer called “domain privacy” should explain the information you provide and the identity used for registration. If the description only talks about hiding contact details from public search, ask about the rest of the process.
Put the answers beside the price. A plan that meets your needs should make it possible to understand the arrangement before you create an account or upload a document. You should also know how to manage the name after registration and where to find renewal pricing.
The 2024 ICANN announcement concerned its registration-data framework for contracted parties. Country-code extensions have their own registry arrangements. For .RU and .SU, use information specific to the extension and the service you’re buying, including how any identity verification works.
How xUID handles the customer side
With xUID, you register using an email-and-password account. We don’t ask for your name, home address, phone number, passport, or another personal identity document. Customers don’t complete ESIA verification themselves.
The registration uses the identity arrangement you select. Base has a shared identity. Private Identity adds a dedicated registrant identity for your account, while Full Bulletproof provides an exclusive identity with priority support and complaint handling under the service agreement.
Those options solve different needs. If you want to register a name for a private project, start by comparing the base registration with Private Identity. If you also need xUID to handle abuse complaints, read what Full Bulletproof Protection includes before checkout.
Keep the questions specific
Ask which identity will sit behind the domain and whether the quoted fee covers registration or an add-on. Check the renewal amount too. If you’re buying for clients, confirm whose account will manage the portfolio and how your team will request changes.
Our .RU ESIA guide and .SU ESIA guide explain the distinction between the customer’s account and the supplied registration identity. They are a useful next stop if you want an offshore domain without completing personal verification yourself.
Anonymous .RU domains $50/year. .SU domains $75/year.
