A blank name field in a public domain lookup can leave buyers with the wrong impression about privacy. The record tells you what the lookup publishes. It doesn’t show every detail the registration company collected when the customer opened an account.
That distinction appeared in ICANN’s June 2021 explanation of registration-data accuracy. ICANN described confusion between redacted data and privacy or proxy services, alongside the accuracy obligations that applied to its contracted registrars. Looking back at that discussion helps explain why two offers called “private registration” can work differently.
Ask what happens before the public lookup
A provider may collect a customer’s identity and keep some fields out of public results. Another service may supply the registrant identity used for the domain. Those arrangements give customers different relationships with the registration company.
ICANN’s privacy and proxy definitions distinguish a privacy service, where the customer remains the registrant, from a proxy service, where the service provider is the registrant of record and licenses use of the name. These definitions concern the ICANN registration context; the terms for a particular country-code domain still need their own check.
For a buyer, “What information do you ask me for?” is a better first question than “Does this include WHOIS privacy?” Follow it with a second: whose identity will the registration use?
The xUID account and registration identity
xUID signup uses an email address and password. We don’t ask for your personal name, home address, phone number, or identity documents. Customers don’t complete their own ESIA verification for an order.
Base registration uses a shared identity. Private Identity gives your account a dedicated registrant identity; Full Bulletproof adds an exclusive identity and priority support, with complaint handling under the service agreement. Choose the arrangement before registration so your order reflects what you need from the start.
Keep control of the account you use
Privacy doesn’t remove everyday account work. Keep access to the signup inbox, save your order details, and check renewal dates. If someone helps run your website, agree who pays renewals and who can request domain changes.
You can pay xUID with cryptocurrency or an account balance. The anonymous registration guide explains the signup and payment flow, while the protection comparison shows which registration identity each option includes.
Start with .RU or .SU availability once you’ve chosen the identity arrangement for your project.
Anonymous .RU domains $50/year. .SU domains $75/year.
